Marcus C. Evans Jr. Sworn into Office as State Representative of the 33rd District

SPRINGFIELD, IL - Filling the seat left vacant by retiring state Rep. Marlow Colvin, Marcus C. Evans Jr. (D-Chicago) was officially sworn into office on Friday to begin his career representing the people of the 33rd District.

"I am honored to serve my community and I look forward to being an open, accessible legislator who addresses the needs of constituents and works on their behalf to take on the tough issues in Springfield," Evans said. "These are difficult times and our communities need dedicated leaders that will fight for better job opportunities, infrastructure improvements and a quality education for our children."

Evans is a longtime leader in his community who previously worked as the Deputy Chief of Staff for Alderman Michelle Harris of the 8th Ward. His community involvement in the 8th ward includes volunteering as Director of the Summer Sports, co-chairing the Family Basket Picnic and the Back to School Parade and Jamboree. Evans is an IHSA licensed sports official with the Metropolitan Officials Organization and the Central Officials Association, licensed in both basketball and football.

As a cancer survivor since 2006, Evans has repeatedly defeated the odds and overcome obstacles. He is dedicated to improving access to healthcare for working families and increasing cancer awareness. Working tirelessly to encourage other people battling cancer, Evans volunteered with the American Cancer Society and later joined their Cancer Action Network where he traveled nationally advocating for quality healthcare legislation and cancer research funding for American citizens. Other top priorities include advocating for seniors and pension reform.

"My experience both as a community activist as well as a cancer survivor have helped pushed me to work to improve healthcare policies in our state and to continue to fight for the overall health of my community," Evans said. "I look forward hearing first-hand from the people I represent and turning their ideas into action."

Evans' full-time constituent service office will be in the same location as his predecessor at 8539 S. Cottage Grove in Chicago.

Evans currently represents the 33rd District on Chicago's South Side including parts of Chicago's 5th, 7th, 8th and 10th Wards. For more information, contact Evan’s office at (773) 783-8492.
