Evans Passes Resolution Naming U.S. Route 41 in Honor of Purple Heart Recipients

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – In recognition of the brave soldiers that have sacrificed for our country, state Rep. Marcus C. Evans Jr., D-Chicago, passed a resolution designating the portion of U.S. Route 41 in Illinois as the Purple Heart Trail. This resolution is part of a national effort to expand the existing Purple Heart Trail throughout the U.S. highway system.

“This initiative is a great way to recognize the men and women who have sacrificed for our freedoms,” said Evans. “Joining this national effort in support of the Purple Heart Trail is a small token of appreciation for the contributions that they have made for our country. I thank my colleagues for their unanimous support of this resolution, and urge the body to pass further legislation to support our returning troops and their families.”

The Purple Heart is a combat decoration that is awarded to members of the military who were wounded or killed in the line of duty. Evans’ House Joint Resolution 26 requests the Illinois Department of Transportation post signs designating U.S. Route 41 as the Purple Heart Trail.

“We applaud Rep. Evans for his leadership in getting the Purple Heart Trail introduced and passed with unanimous support from the Illinois House,” said Erica Borggren, director of the Illinois Department of Veterans’ Affairs. “Efforts such as these provide a tangible and enduring means of keeping our veterans – and their sacrifices – visible to the people of Illinois. We thank him and all the co-sponsors of this resolution.”
